The Giants have had a fine running attack, spearheaded bySoccer jerseys Brandon Jacobs. Jacobs is averaging a hefty 4.9 YPC and has had one touchdown. Running back Derrick Ward is averaging a very fine 6.8 YPC.
Defense
Although the Giants’ offense has been effective, it’s their defense that has been, like last season, potent. The team’s yards allowed is first in the NFC. They’ve given up just 254 rushing yards (second in the NFC) and 503 passing yards (first in the NFC). Their 43 points allowed is by far the best around with Carolina holding second place in that category with 70. The club has accumulated 13 sacks. DT Fred Robbins leads the club with four quarterback takedowns behind the line of scrimmage, while DE Justin Tuck has three. The defense has also made 12 tackles for a loss.
Conference Competition
The Giants possess the best record in the NFC and play disciplined ball. Will New York go 16-0? No, they won’t, but they have a good shot at winning the division and getting back to the Super Bowl. Of course to do so, they are going to have to contend with a few tough NFC East opponents.
The Dallas Cowboys offer a fine tuned offense and a tough as nails defense. They have one of the deepest rosters in the league. The Washington Redskins have improved greatly since the Giants saw them in week one. The Redskins lost that initial contest but have been extremely successful since then. Both teams are 4-1. Although the Philadelphia Eagles are 2-3, they field an effective offense and a good defense.
The Skinny
For the Giants to continue to be effective, their defense must continue to dominate opponents, especially at the line of scrimmage, and their offense has to play mistake-free ball. If they can do that, they will be winners more times than not.
Last year’s Super Bowl Champions, the New York Giants, look to be for real. The team is perfect in its first four games, and they are outscoring opponents 31.7 to 12.2 points per game. In their contest this week, versus the Seattle Seahawks, they dismantled their opponent, beating them 44-6. New York is not a powerhouse when it comes to scoring, their point total ranks them 11th amongst 16 teams; still, they certainly score enough to win.
Here are a few other important season stats.
Offense
Eli Manning in four games has thrown for 765 yards, going 65 of 107 (60.7%) and tossing four touchdowns. He’s thrown one interception and has been sacked four times. Manning’s rating is 91.1. Those are decent stats. Manning’s single interception ties him for second in the league. That may be the most important offensive stat thus far. The fact is that Manning has been prone to making mistakes in the past. Late last season and throughout the playoffs, he appeared to mature, making better decisions and becoming a more adept leader.
On the receiving end, Plaxico Burress has averaged 14.4 YPC and caught one TD, while Amani Toomer, who also has one score, is averaging 11.0 YPC. Toomer, who is 34, has been in the league 13 years. Burress is 31 years old with nine years in the league.
