San Francisco 49ers Alex Smith Frank Gore

Sunday, the 2-11 San Francisco 49ers will head to Florida to take on the 9-4 Jacksonville Jaguars. The game doesn't mean much for the 49ers but actually means quite a bit for the Jags. A win would get Jacksonville their tenth of the 2005 season and one step closer to assuring a spot in the post-season. Perhaps the 49ers can play spoiler and delay the Jags' hopes. Not likely.49ers quarterback Alex Smith makes his fifth start of what has been a disastrous rookie season. The number one overall pick from Utah has compiled a quarterback rating of 24.7 and has 4 Brett Favre White jersey
zero touchdown passes compared with 9 interceptions. In fairness to Smith he hasn't had a whole lot of help. His offensive line has been in shambles this year and he hasn't gotten much out of his running game or his receivers. It won't be very easy for Smith this week as he goes up against a Jacksonville pass defense ranked 8th in the NFL. Their secondary, led by Rashean Mathis (4 interceptions), Deion Grant (3 interceptions), and Terry Cousin (3 interceptions), should make the day a nightmare for the 49ers' rookie quarterback. Jaguars' linebacker Mike Peterson has picked off 3 passes this year and he may be a wild card this weekend for the Jags' pass defense. Smith needs to hope that he can get his two main receivers, Brandon Lloyd and Johnnie Morton, involved in this ball game. He also needs to distribute some intermediate passes to running backs Frank Gore and Maurice Hicks. More than likely Smith won't have much time to throw against the Jags' solid pass rush and will probably be sacked, pressured, and knocked down numerous times.San Francisco's running game has been dismal this year as they come in ranked 27th in rush offense. Kevan Barlow, the team's starter, is listed as doubtful with a knee injury. Frank Gore, the 49ers' rookie from Miami, needs to pick up the slack for the offense in this game. It would help greatly if Gore and even Maurice Hicks can milk the clock and keep Jacksonville's defense on the field. That scenario isn't too likely even though the Jaguars posses a fairly solid run defense.Jaguars backup quarterback David Garrard will make his third consecutive start in place of the injured Byron Leftwich. Garrard has done a decent job in his two prior starts and the team has compiled a 1-1 record. Look for Garrard to utilize every weapon in his arsenal in this game. Jacksonville's top three receivers, Jimmy Smith, Ernie Wilford, and Matt Jones could have field days against a 49ers' secondary that ranks dead last in the league. The fact that Niners starting cornerback Ahmed Plummer is out with an injury will also buoy the Jags' passing game. Garrard, likely to have a great deal of time in the pocket against the Niners' weak pass rush, will also use his tight ends, Kyle Brady and George Wrighster, and his running backs, Fred Taylor and Greg Jones. All signs point to Garrard having the finest day of his pro career in this game.Jacksonville's offense possesses a strong thunder and lightning combination at running back. Second-year man Greg Jones has proven to be a bruiser, unafraid to dish out punishment to opposing tacklers. Fred Taylor counters Jones with his quickness and finesse. The two have combined to the give the Jags a more than formidable running game. The tandem will probably give the 49ers' 23rd ranked run defense fits. The coaching matchup in this game favors the Jags as well. Jack Del Rio is currently in his third year with the team and has clearly earned the respect of his players. Mike Nolan of the 49ers is in his rookie season and has gained the respect of his players and they play hard for him. The problem is that they simply don't have enough talent to compete with good teams on a weekly basis. This game should be pretty boring to watch, unless you're a fan of the Jaguars. They simply have too much talent for the 49ers and figure to give them trouble in all facets of the game. The fact that the Jags are motivated by getting one more victory Jets 6 Sanchez Jersey
closer to the playoffs is another bad sign for San Francisco. Look for it to get pretty ugly down south this week.Outcome... Jaguars win 34-9.San Francisco 49ers Injury Report: CB Ahmed Plummer is out with an ankle injury. RB Kevan Barlow is doubtful with a knee, as is WR Arnaz Battle. DB's Shawntae Spencer (Quad), and Mike Adams (Knee) are both questionable. DT Bryant Young (Knee) and LB Saleem Rasheed (Knee) are both probable.Jacksonville Jaguars Injury Report: QB Byron Leftwich is out with an ankle injury. RB Rich Alexis doubtful with a groin. DE Paul Spicer is questionable with a hip. CB Rashean Mathis is probable with a finger injury.
