On this Labor Day weekend, it seems fitting that the Albert Haynesworth saga continues to drag on for his employers, even as the season inches closer.
Because the team felt Haynesworth played so bad in cheap nfl jerseys
the team’s preseason finale against the Cardinals, the $100 million man’s role for Sunday night’s opener is now in doubt. In other words, the Redskins could be paying Albert Haynesworth the biggest defensive contract in NFL history to ride the bench.
The possibility of the Redskins’ best defensive player (yes, he is the best defensive player on the team) riding the bench is troubling, yet not surprising. While he has immense talent, his worth ethic is clearly a few notches below Mike Shanahan’s requirement.
But at this point, should that even matter? If Haynesworth is going to learn a lesson from this whole offseason ordeal, he would have already learned it. The Redskins would prefer to have Haynesworth contributing on the field, or they would like to trade him. Benching him does Dallas Cowboys jersey
not seem to accomplish either of these objectives, as surely his trade value decreases when he is off the field.
It is fair for a Redskins fan to call into question the decision to opt for a 3-4 defense, which will make its Washington regular season debut on Sunday evening. One could argue that coaches should build a scheme around their best players; on defense, barring remarkable second-year steps from Brian Orakpo, Haynesworth is the unquestionable top dog for the Redskins.
But even with the switch to the 3-4, and Haynesworth’s unhappiness with the new system, it makes no sense for Albert to come off the bench. Not only will it likely hurt his trade value, but it also makes him seem like the victim in his public battle against Mike Shanahan.
For this situation to Minnesota Vikings jersey
resolve itself, Haynesworth must be on the field. Even if he is playing at a level under his capability, it makes more sense to pay Albert his money to be on the field than on the bench. And if the Redskins want to compete in the loaded NFC East, the defense probably needs to be one of the league’s best. For Washington to meet this requirement, Haynesworth and his fat pockets should be taking up space near the line of scrimmage instead of the bench.
